6. To Capitalize or Not to Capitalize

Keyword terms entered in capital letters versus lowercase letters tends to generate a different number of search results. This experiment looks to see if page ranking is affected in the process.

After comparing results from a URL made up all capital letters and one of all lowercase letters, turns out there’s difference in page rank. Interestingly enough, page names made up of capital letters will still generate more search results than pages with all lowercase URLs.

7. SEO Effects and the Google +1 button

How does Google’s Search Plus My World and the Google+ button affect a site’s Google search rankings? The experiment used brand new site pages, each with a Google+ button with no apparent effects on search rankings.

On the other hand, whenever a Google+ button was clicked, the page showed up on friends’ lists in the number one position. SEO-wise, this is a very good thing.

8. Google Update Effects on Site Ranking

With Google’s ongoing attempts to identify and eliminate spam sites, their update algorithms have damaged search rankings for many reputable sites. So how hard is it for a site to recover from a Google update?

A group of marketers took a look at their data before and after an update to see how long it takes to regain their rank position. Turns out it takes a good long while to regain a site’s original rank. Ultimately, fixing whatever problem triggered the de-ranking can help sites completely regain lost ground.

9. Blackhat SEO Tactics

While the warnings against using blackhat SEO practices abound, a group of online marketers set out to see if these tactics really do damage site rank. Using a site with a 3rd position keyword ranking, they added well over 50,000 spam links from forums, blog comments and sidebar links. Within a month the site dropped to a 14th position keyword ranking.

10. How Fast Can a New Site Gain Ranking?

Google’s Penguin update has made it difficult for new sites to rank while at the same time placing authoritative sites in the top positions. This experiment used a new site, focused on a specific keyword and set up keyword specific backlinks to authoritative sites. Within two months, the new site reached number four in the search rankings for its keyword.
